al swainger

Al has been teaching for 17 years, holds a current CRB Certificate and is a member of the Incorporated Society Of Musicians.
He obtained a BA (Hons) degree in Music from Colchester Institute in 1993 and subsequently a PCGE in Secondary Music from Bretton Hall in 1994.
Since then Al has taught both privately (1994- ) and also for
Devon Youth Music (1994-2004), Devon County Council (2004-2009), Exeter College (2007- ) & South West Music School (2008- ).

Although now focused as an electric and upright bass specialist, particularly in jazz & popular music styles, Al also previously trained as a classical pianist and french horn player (both to grade 8 standard) as well as being a self-taught amateur rock guitarist!

Al's approach to teaching is very much focused on enabling the student to think and learn for themselves. Developing core skills such as sight-reading, chord & scale knowledge, improvisation & rhythmic awareness is essential for any serious musician and features heavily in lessons. By combining a general understanding of music theory with a wide range of repertoire in a variety of styles any motivated student can achieve excellent results.

Tuition for instrumental exams is available when requested but not considered essential although Al has a 100% pass rate for students that have chosen to take exams.
